A lot of women, especially mothers, are afraid to ask for meal planning help. But many of us – myself included – can’t do it all on our own. So who’s going to help you meal plan? Yup, that’s right: You don’t have to do it all yourself!
I realize that for whatever reason, you might have to do it all. But can you think of any way someone might be able to help you, even if it’s just a friend watching your kids while you shop? The reality is that most of us can’t do everything on our to-do list, so we need assistance where we can get it. When help comes your way, jump on it!
Categories of Meal Planning
Most people separate their meal planning into four parts:
3. prepping; and
I do most of these four parts of meal planning because Ryan’s working long hours trying to grow a business, which means that much of it is my responsibility. Plus, if I left meal planning up to Ryan, we’d never have any fruit or vegetables on the table. Eating (relatively) healthy is important to me, so meal planning is something I have to do if I want us to eat well.
But to get a complete picture, my meal planning also includes two other parts:
5. cleaning; and
Ryan pretty much does these last two, and it’s amazing. He unloads the dishwasher and even cleans up the kitchen. (That man can work some magic on those pots with baking soda.) Do I want to clean? No, thank you!
But best of all… he takes the kids while I shop and do some food prep. Honestly, who needs jewelry? Just let me go to the store by myself!
Who’s Your Who?
What parts of meal planning are you going to do? Are you doing all of them? Can your spouse help with the clean up? Can your older kids help with the chopping?
Over time, I’ve found that cooking and baking is a way for me to spend quality time with my kids. They LOVE to help in the kitchen. We need to eat and we need to spend time together, so why not combine the two? Plus I am teaching them real world, useful skills that they’ll have the rest of their lives. Even little ones can help in little ways.
Ask For Help!
Once you’ve determined who’s going to do what, you need to ask those people for help. Remember in the Meal Planning Foundation when I talked about identifying your Why? If your Why is being there for your kids, explain how meal planning will help you do that. Make sure you’ve first sold them on your Why because they’ll be more willing to help you accomplish your How.
Maybe the help you need is just having a friend to hold you accountable, or to share recipes. Help comes in many different forms, but sometimes we have trouble recognizing it.
You Need Accountability.
In addition to asking for help, I want you to tell as many people as possible that you’re getting your meal planning on track. Post it on Facebook and Instagram. Tell your friends, your co-workers, your neighbors, your parents, and your siblings. You are more likely to follow through if you tell people you’re going to do something. Telling people you’re meal planning will motivate you to keep going.
